Nichola Russell, Headteacher at Sandal Castle VA Primary School, explains that one of their best resources for engaging, motivating, and stimulating children’s learning, while also modelling best practice, are the take-home bags. These have been used right from the start of the year during welcome meetings and induction days.
The classrooms are set out as they will be when the children join in September, so parents, from day one, see the resources and how to use them. The take-home bags, which are not quite homework, are tasks that children take home. The school continually renews, adapts, and adds to the Early Excellence bags to ensure there are enough for all children.
The communication from parents about the bags has been tremendous. They appreciate and understand more about the early years curriculum and the type of questioning that play-based learning encourages.
