Unlocking Children’s Potential: Embracing the Power of Creativity

Join us for the Early Excellence Annual Conference in the North, Midlands and London as we explore the power of creativity in its many guises. We will be delving into all aspects of the Arts and finding out how a curriculum rich in these experiences can ignite imaginations and fuel powerful learning.

The day is packed with influential speakers who will inspire and inform our practice, including Baroness Floella Benjamin, Minister for Children who (as well as being a well-loved children’s television presenter of old) represents in the House of Lords issues that affect children, diversity, media and equality.

We also hear from Pete Moorhouse and Anni McTavish, leading educationalists and passionate advocates of the Arts – as well as Emma-Jo Bairstow who works with schools to develop the teaching of Art in the classroom.

Pablo Picasso described every child as an artist – and our challenge is to ensure we enable this to flourish as each child grows!

From policy to strategy to practice – this will be a day of delights focused on expanding the use of the Arts to deeply enrich learning in early childhood and beyond!

Developing Young Mathematicians

Course description

Following on from our highly-informative ‘Designing Your Curriculum’ course, Early Excellence will be delivering this essential
new course focused on the fundamentals of teaching Mathematics in the Early Years.

With the new focus on achieving an effective curriculum, the proposed changes to the ELGs, along with Ofsted’s current inspection framework which requires staff to be “knowledgeable about the teaching of early Mathematics” and the latest research review which highlights the need for teaching Maths “in real word contexts which have meaning for the child” – it is more important than ever that teachers have a keen understanding of how children develop mathematical concepts.

The day will be highly-informative, packed with subject knowledge and practical solutions to enable schools to reflect on their approach to teaching Maths through the EYFS and into Y1 – whether through a scheme or not – and will examine the principles that underpin this early learning and the key steps towards progression and mastery.

Benefits:

  • Explore effective strategies for teaching early Maths
  • Develop a clear understanding of progression in learning through EYFS and beyond
  • Consider the role of the adult in developing language, problem solving and reasoning

Big, Big Maths: Working with Maths on a Large Scale

Course description

During this twilight we will explore the ways in which children use their muscles and minds together as they learn. When they lift, carry, transport, dig, balance and fill they are exploring many of their own ideas and developing their understanding of key concepts. Through highly active, physical experiences children thoroughly embed their understanding of early mathematical concepts and learn to use mathematical vocabulary in purposeful and meaningful ways. This twilight will outline the key experiences, resources and organisation which are needed to support and extend children’s early mathematical thinking and will provide valuable strategies for providing inspiring maths in a big way.

Ensuring that all aspects of the KS1 curriculum are effectively taught and that Key Skills are embedded in order for children to make at least good progress from their starting points is an ongoing challenge. At the same time we know that children at this Key Stage learn most effectively when given opportunities to make links, explore and think critically.  This workshop has been specifically designed to support schools who are looking to develop the principles of continuous provision and enhancements in their classrooms that enable children to make progress.

Using the Interactive Environment and Case Study examples, delegates will have the opportunity to consider how a well-organised, challenging environment, underpins effective learning and teaching across the whole curriculum.
