Developing Young Mathematicians

Course description

Following on from our highly-informative ‘Designing Your Curriculum’ course, Early Excellence will be delivering this essential
new course focused on the fundamentals of teaching Mathematics in the Early Years.

With the new focus on achieving an effective curriculum, the proposed changes to the ELGs, along with Ofsted’s current inspection framework which requires staff to be “knowledgeable about the teaching of early Mathematics” and the latest research review which highlights the need for teaching Maths “in real word contexts which have meaning for the child” – it is more important than ever that teachers have a keen understanding of how children develop mathematical concepts.

The day will be highly-informative, packed with subject knowledge and practical solutions to enable schools to reflect on their approach to teaching Maths through the EYFS and into Y1 – whether through a scheme or not – and will examine the principles that underpin this early learning and the key steps towards progression and mastery.

From Mark Making to Writing: Nurturing Young Writers Workshop $50.00 Oxford 14 Feb

From Mark Making to Writing: Nurturing Young Writers

Course description

As children become more confident, engaged and excited about their mark making and begin to understand real writing, it is critical to offer support in ways that maintain children’s love of writing and its meaning in a range of contexts – for notes, lists, letters, stories and so on. Guiding and supporting children’s early writing is a skilful process which we will explore during this practical session, focusing on the developmental stages. Practitioners will consider the experiences, activities and support they provide within continuous provision to promote children’s passion, confidence and skill in writing. Practitioners will also consider what “exceeding” writing looks like and reflect on this in relation to their own practice and provision.

This is the second of three workshops on this day.

The Role of the Adult

Course description

We know that high quality interactions play a vital part in developing higher level thinkers and motivated learners. Alongside this, engaging in conversation during child-initiated activities helps children readily absorb new vocabulary and language structures. Developing, sustaining and evaluating the richness of interactions within our busy environments can be challenging.

This course will explore the clear links between creating continuous provision, and high quality enhancements. We will discuss the importance of providing an environment rich in interaction; a space which promotes questioning, discussion, imagination and shared thinking.  Practitioners will leave the training with a clear vision for improving the quality of interactions within their setting.
