Julie Fisher Seminar
Next Steps: Moving on Through KS1

Course description

This course is designed to enable Year 1 and Year 2 teachers to build on effective practice in the Foundation Stage. It considers how young children learn best and the implications of this for teaching strategies in the classroom. Issues addressed:

  • How children learn most effectively age 5, 6 & 7
  • Planning an effective learning environment in Year 1 that builds on best foundation stage practice
  • Organising the learning day – considering the impact of the school timetable on learning
  • The differing benefits of learning alongside an adult and learning independently

Developing Young Mathematicians

Course description

Following on from our highly-informative ‘Designing Your Curriculum’ course, Early Excellence will be delivering this essential
new course focused on the fundamentals of teaching Mathematics in the Early Years.

With the new focus on achieving an effective curriculum, the proposed changes to the ELGs, along with Ofsted’s current inspection framework which requires staff to be “knowledgeable about the teaching of early Mathematics” and the latest research review which highlights the need for teaching Maths “in real word contexts which have meaning for the child” – it is more important than ever that teachers have a keen understanding of how children develop mathematical concepts.

The day will be highly-informative, packed with subject knowledge and practical solutions to enable schools to reflect on their approach to teaching Maths through the EYFS and into Y1 – whether through a scheme or not – and will examine the principles that underpin this early learning and the key steps towards progression and mastery.

Benefits:

  • Explore effective strategies for teaching early Maths
  • Develop a clear understanding of progression in learning through EYFS and beyond
  • Consider the role of the adult in developing language, problem solving and reasoning
  • Gain practical ideas for the effective use of key resources

In today’s rapidly changing world, children need to be able to do much more than repeat a list of facts. Supporting children in developing thinking, rather than just learning facts and skills ensures that children are taught the skills that they will need in later life. Providing opportunities for children to question, share ideas, predict and hypothesise is critical for cognitive development and allows children to learn how to learn.

All About Children’s Work & Meeting Expectations in KS1

Course description

Although many classrooms have elements of continuous provision in KS1, particularly in Year One, there is still much uncertainty as to how best to make it work and how it might be used in Year Two. Questions such as ‘How can we ensure that children are challenged and making progress whilst engaged in self -initiated learning?’ and ‘How can we best evidence self-initiated learning?’ need answering.

During this course, delegates will explore how children can be taught the skills and approaches needed to become independent learners, increasingly able to manage the planning, evaluating and evidencing of their own work. This session will focus on a cycle of learning that builds up manageable ways to evidence learning through planning and recording and shares high quality examples of this approach in practice.

The Story Factory: Making the Most of Small World

Course description

The ability to ‘talk a story’ is the critical first step in children becoming successful story writers. Small World resources provide the ideal opportunity for children to bring their ideas to life using concrete objects. They can be used to support the development of characters, create settings and explore plots from the simple to the complex.

During this workshop delegates will look at how to use and enrich their Small World resources effectively to inspire and extend young writers in both the EYFS and into KS1, and how this links with the challenges of curriculum. Designing Your Curriculum: Successfully Meeting the Needs of your School Community

Course description

With the placing of the Curriculum at the heart of the new Ofsted Inspection Framework, it is critical that schools embrace the opportunity to consider whether their current curriculum is fit for purpose and the sustained impact it has on children as learners.

Early Excellence has developed a new course to help schools strategically address this challenge; drawing on the themes of Intent, Implementation and Impact.

This innovative course will offer school leaders the ideal opportunity to critically evaluate their current curriculum and examine different pedagogical approaches to designing a ‘bold and ambitious curriculum that gives every child a full, deep, rich education’ as called for by the Head of Ofsted. Enquiring Minds: Investigate the Wonder of STEM

Course description

Join us for an inspiring training session as we explore the world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths in the Early Years.

Reflect on the importance of STEM and our role in supporting our young learners in a rapidly changing world where we cannot accurately predict what life opportunities and challenges young children will face in their future.

Consider how children’s curiosity and critical thinking can be developed through investigative experiences as we embrace the elements of STEM and think how to creatively combine these with other curriculum areas in ways that respond to children’s interests and ignite their imaginations – resulting in passionate and successful learners.

Practitioners will leave this session buzzing with ideas to develop and experiment with back in their own setting.

Changing Your Approach: All About children’s work and meeting expectations in KS1

Course description

This new course is focused on the fundamentals of teaching Mathematics in the Early Years.
