Unlocking Children’s Potential: Embracing the Power of Creativity

Join us for the Early Excellence Annual Conference in the North, Midlands and London as we explore the power of creativity in its many guises. We will be delving into all aspects of the Arts and finding out how a curriculum rich in these experiences can ignite imaginations and fuel powerful learning.

The day is packed with influential speakers who will inspire and inform our practice, including Baroness Floella Benjamin, Minister for Children who (as well as being a well-loved children’s television presenter of old) represents in the House of Lords issues that affect children, diversity, media and equality.

We also hear from Pete Moorhouse and Anni McTavish, leading educationalists and passionate advocates of the Arts – as well as Emma-Jo Bairstow who works with schools to develop the teaching of Art in the classroom.

Pablo Picasso described every child as an artist – and our challenge is to ensure we enable this to flourish as each child grows!

From policy to strategy to practice – this will be a day of delights focused on expanding the use of the Arts to deeply enrich learning in early childhood and beyond!

Outdoors Together

Course description

As adults we often fondly remember our childhood outdoor experiences, walking through puddles, peeking out from a den made with sheets and the thrill of the first ride on the rope swing we made with our friends. During this session we’ll look at what drives young children as learners outside and how this can inform best practice. We’ll consider the question, if it can be done indoors, why do it outdoors?  We will discuss what learning outdoors is for. We will reflect on how to maximise the learning potential of outdoors, looking at how to make it manageable, whether it’s building and constructing, water play or supporting children’s desire to move. The session should begin a conversation about what outdoors learning could look like for your school, so that adults and children can delight together in the everyday magic of being outdoors.

Big, Big Maths: Working with Maths on a Large Scale

Course description

Join this twilight with your team and gain practical ideas to stimulate maths outdoors.

During the twilight we will explore how in the outdoors, children use their muscles and minds together to learn new things. When they lift, carry, transport, dig, balance and fill they are exploring many of their own ideas and challenging key concepts. By using large, open-ended materials and by exploring a wide range of possibilities, outdoor play can provide many opportunities for children to experience real mathematics on a large scale.

Through highly active, physical experiences children thoroughly embed their understanding of early mathematical concepts and learn to use mathematical vocabulary in purposeful and meaningful ways. This twilight will outline the key experiences, resources and organisation which are needed to support and extend children’s early mathematical thinking and will provide valuable strategies for providing inspiring maths in a big way outdoors.

How to Challenge and Extend Thinking in Y1

Course description

In today’s rapidly changing world, children need to be able to do much more than repeat a list of facts. Supporting children in developing thinking, rather than just learning facts and skills ensures that children are taught the skills that they will need in later life. They need to be critical thinkers who can make sense of information, make inferences, analyse, contrast and compare. Providing opportunities for children to question, share ideas, predict and hypothesise is critical for cognitive development and allows children to learn how to learn.

This session will explore ways that teachers in Y1 can stretch children’s thinking, offering them challenges that fire their imagination and help to develop their problem-solving skills
