Developing Skilful Leadership of the EYFS

Course description

To lead a team effectively and inspire a continual drive towards excellence requires high quality leadership skills. To support current EYFS leaders in developing these skills, this four-day course will focus on the multi-faceted nature of their role, covering the key areas involved in leading the EYFS with skill and confidence.

Day One – Establishing Shared Vision + Values
This day will focus on leading by establishing clarity about what we want for young children. The course will ask delegates to explore their own values and motivation as educations and benchmark these in order to establish a clear vision of excellence. Activities will be introduced that leaders can use back with their teams.

Day Two – Exploring Monitoring
Leading practice is the focus of day two with interactive sessions to explore how leaders monitor and drive outcomes based on the depth of their own understanding of best practice and quality provision. The ability to monitor practice of children’s overall development is key – and gap tasks will be introduced to extend development.

Day Three – Securing and Demonstrating Progress
Day three will explore accountability. We will focus on reviewing current approaches to assessment and how data is used to inform practice and provision both responsively and strategically. We will explore ways of clearly identifying and prioritising areas for development, the process of change and its management. Time will also be given to discuss ways of presenting this information to others.

Day Four – Developing the EYFS Team
On this final day we will focus on leading people, considering how to effectively manage and lead others. We will explore models of mentoring, performance management and designing effective staff development programmes. We will spend the afternoon in a local school.

Starting Out in the EYFS

Getting Off to a Flying Start: New to Teaching in the EYFS Three Day Autumn $450.00

Getting Off to a Flying Start: New to Teaching in the EYFS

Course description

The spotlight on the EYFS has never been brighter, with much debate about what is best practice. This three-day course has been specifically designed to give those working in Nursery and Reception the knowledge and skills to ensure effective teaching and learning is secured for all children.

Time will be given to look at how environments are critical in developing and enriching children’s learning.  We will also explore the relationship between teaching and child-initiated learning – with a focus on how literacy and mathematics can be taught appropriately and meaningfully for young children.

Day One: Understanding the EYFS
During this day we will be exploring the key principles of the EYFS; the unique child, building positive relationships, enabling environments and learning and development.  We will explore the statutory requirements of the EYFS and discuss children’s self-initiated play, along with a range of strategies that adults can use to extend children’s language, ideas and thinking. Time will be spent exploring effective and practical approaches to observation, assessment and planning. At the end of the day participants will decide on a personalised gap task that is relevant to their current situation.

Day Two: Creating an effective Learning Environment
The environment is often described as the ‘third teacher’ – critical in supporting and challenging children in their ongoing journey of learning and development. The key principles of continuous provision and enhanced provision, indoors and outdoors, will be explored practically using the Interactive Environments in the Centre. We will also consider daily routines and how they can be used effectively to support and extend learning.

Day Three: Exploring Teaching in the Early Years
With the on-going debate surrounding what teaching in the EYFS year should look like; this session will explore what is effective practice in these unique year groups. Delegates will explore the key skills; including in literacy and mathematics, that children need to develop and how these can be both taught and embedded in developmentally appropriate and meaningful ways.  The day will also include practical ideas for how to plan an effective, rich learning environment and strategies to maximise learning through classroom routines. Learning from the gap task will be shared and key messages from the sessions drawn together.

Benefits

  • A deeper knowledge of the statutory requirements in the EYFS.
  • An understanding of how to plan for the unique needs of children across the whole learning environment.
  • Clarification of the critical role of the adult in the early years.
  • Practical tools to support you with developing your own practice and learning environments

Developing the Characteristics of Effective Learning One Day Autumn $175.00

Developing the Characteristics of Effective Learning

Course description

The Characteristics of Effective Learning are fundamental to every child. They focus on how children learn rather than what they learn. Research has shown that it is these skills that make a difference to children’s long term outcomes and to their ability to become happy, resourceful and resilient adults. It is our responsibility as early years practitioners to support the development of these skills during these crucial formative years. When planning and supporting children it is important to consider the different ways children learn and reflect this in how we teach, organise our learning environment and support individual children and groups of children.

Big, Big Maths: Working with Maths on a Large Scale Twilight Autumn $35.00

Big, Big Maths: Working with Maths on a Large Scale

Course description

Join this twilight with your team and gain practical ideas to stimulate maths outdoors.
During the twilight we will explore how in the outdoors, children use their muscles and minds together to learn new things. When they lift, carry, transport, dig, balance and fill they are exploring many of their own ideas and challenging key concepts. By using large, open-ended materials and by exploring a wide range of possibilities, outdoor play can provide many opportunities for children to experience real mathematics on a large scale.

Through highly active, physical experiences children thoroughly embed their understanding of early mathematical concepts and learn to use mathematical vocabulary in purposeful and meaningful ways. This twilight will outline the key experiences, resources and organisation which are needed to support and extend children’s early mathematical thinking and will provide valuable strategies for providing inspiring maths in a big way outdoors.

Benefits
